Vehicle Eligibility
Chile has strict vehicle import regulations, and not all vehicles qualify.
Vehicles Commonly Allowed:
- New vehicles only (0 km) for general imports
- Used vehicles only under special circumstances, such as:
- Returning residents
- Diplomats
- Special government exemptions
- Motorcycles (restrictions apply)
- Heavy machinery and commercial equipment (permitted with documentation)
🚫 Used vehicle imports are generally prohibited for the general public, except under approved exemptions.
Documents Required
The following documents are typically required to import a vehicle into Chile:
- Original vehicle title
- Commercial invoice or bill of sale
- Passport and Chilean ID (RUT), if applicable
- Import declaration (DIN)
- Proof of residency or visa status (for exemptions)
- Power of Attorney (if using a customs broker)
- Certificate of origin (for trade benefits, if applicable)
All documents must be accurate and submitted in Spanish.
Duty Taxes & Fees
Import taxes are calculated based on the CIF value (Cost + Insurance + Freight).
Estimated Charges:
- Import Duty: 6%
- Value Added Tax (IVA): 19%
- Customs Processing Fees
- Additional port or inspection fees may apply
⚠️ Final duties and taxes are determined by Chilean Customs (Servicio Nacional de Aduanas).
"El Menaje de Casa"
Returning Residents
Chile allows the importation of household goods (Menaje de Casa) for individuals relocating or returning to the country.
Requirements:
- Goods must be used and for personal use
- Inventory list in Spanish
- Proof of residency or visa
- Shipment must align with relocation timeline
- Items cannot be resold
Some household goods may qualify for partial tax exemptions, depending on immigration status.
Used vehicles are not permitted for import into Chile, including under Menaje de Casa. Household goods may qualify for relocation benefits, but vehicles are excluded under Chilean law.
