Vehicle import Eligibility

(All Must be DOT & EPA compliant)
🚫 Age Limit:
There is no official maximum age limit;
however:
- Newer vehicles are generally taxed less due to better emission standards
Duty Taxes & Fees
All vehicles entering Puerto Rico are subject to local excise tax ( Arancel ) , which varies based on vehicles type and value.
- Calculated by: Make, Model, Year, Suggested retail value, and CO2 emission (for newer vehicles)
- You can estimate the excise tax using Puerto Rico's Autoimpuesto Portal: https://www.hacienda.pr.gov
Additional Fees:
- Port Handling fees: Approx. $200 - $600
- Registration and licensing
- Inspection Fees (If registering in the island)
El Menaje de Casa
(Returning residents)
"El Menaje de casa" refers to the tax exemption program for returning Puerto Ricans who lived abroad.
🧳 Who Qualifies:
- Puerto Ricans returning to reside permanently after living outside of Puerto Rico for more than 1 year
- Proof of residency abroad and intention to settle in Puerto Rico
- Only one request per person or family
Vehicle import under "EL Menaje"
One vehicle may be imported tax-free if:
- It was owned and used for at least 6 months prior to return
- It is included as part of the menaje de casa declaration
- Vehicle is not sold within 3 years of entering PR.

✅Vehicles with liens must have a release letter from the lienholder
✅It is illegal to sell a duty-exempt vehicle under "el menaje" within 3 years
✅Duty exemptions does not cover port fees or inspections costs.
Procedures & Important Information

Required Documentation
- Tittle of the vehicle (tittle must be in shippers name or with proper authorization)
- Valid government-issued ID
- Bill of sale pr proof of purchase (if newly acquired)
- Vehicle must not have any open recalls
- Vehicle must be in operable conditions if shipping via RO/RO
- Notarized letter of authorization if not the vehicle owner.

Vehicle Preparation
- Clean the vehicle: Wash exterior and
interior (to comply with customs and
quarantine inspections)
- Remove Personal Items: No personal
belongings inside the car (Unless otherwise
authorized-check with us first!)
- Check fluids & battery: Prevent unnecessary
delays and issues during transport
- Document condition: Take photos of the vehicle from all angles as proof of pre-shipment condition.

Booking the shipment
- Contact us early to reserve space
(ocean freight slots fill quickly)
- Provide accurate vehicle dimensions and
weight
- Select your desired shipping method:
RORO (Roll-On/Roll-Off) — most economical, vehicle is driven on/off the ship
- Container provides added security and option to include spare parts or personal goods (restrictions apply)
